Afternoon supervision

The high school is run as a full-day school. The afternoon is a central component of Theresian education and is characterized by the fact that guidance is provided by our teachers. In this way, we enable in-depth learning and an open, trusting environment. Additionally, there is a wide range of optional activities in which students can develop their interests and talents.

With our concept, we specifically promote community spirit, tolerance, and social skills that are of great importance for later life.

Routine

Lunch

Lunch is taken within the class group. At the Theresianum, meals are cooked fresh, varied, and healthy every day. Children can choose between two different main courses directly on site. Appetizer, salad, and a small dessert are also part of the lunch service. Fresh fruit is available around the clock for free consumption when meals are served.

1st Leisure Unit

After lunch, a leisure unit is on the schedule. Children can use the leisure and sports facilities on campus, stay in the park and forest, or spend time with friends in the class. An educator is available for conversations, as a mediator in conflict situations, but also as an inspiration for variety in leisure time.

Quiet Study

After leisure time, the first study session takes place. This is an individual learning unit that serves to complete written homework. It lasts 50 minutes. Since homework provides students with feedback on whether they have correctly understood the contents of the class, it is important that it is done independently. Therefore, it is desirable that students try to manage their work without the help of others during the first study session. Educators therefore ensure a quiet learning atmosphere in the class.

2nd Leisure Unit

After the quiet study, another leisure unit follows. During this time, a snack is also offered in the dining hall.

Whisper Study

The second study session of the day takes place between 4:30 and 5:30 pm, depending on the grade level and timetable. During this time, students are supposed to finish the written tasks they didn't complete in the first study session. Additionally, they can deepen the contents of the classes in small groups, test each other, or prepare for presentations.

Tutorials

In addition to individual learning times, there are tutorials in the lower school in the subjects German, Mathematics, English, French, and Latin. In the tutorials, no new material is developed, but the content covered in class is deepened and practiced. Attendance at tutorials is mandatory for all students. In case of conflict with non-obligatory exercises, participation in the non-obligatory exercise is only possible with corresponding learning success and with the consent of the subject and tutorial teacher.

The afternoon schedule in the upper grades is divided into 25-minute “units,” with the final unit ending at 5:30 p.m. Students are required to complete at least 10 learning units per week, which are determined anew each week.

In the upper grades, students are not dismissed by their parents; instead, they are responsible for organizing their own time at school. Leaving the school premises is permitted both for individual leisure activities and for doctor’s appointments or other commitments outside of school.

Changes to the weekly schedule should only be necessary in exceptional cases. Requests to leave the school during the day due to urgent reasons can only be accommodated after an appropriate adjustment of the weekly schedule.

After-school activities

Whether volleyball, choir, or learning a musical instrument: depending on their timetable, students can choose from a wide range of optional courses and additional activities in the afternoon – tailored to their individual interests.

In addition to sports and music, the following activities are available:

  • Aquatics and terrarium studies, with a dedicated room for aquariums and terrariums
  • Drama and theatre, including performances in the auditorium
  • German+
  • Civic education / MEP (Model European Parliament)
  • Peer mediation
  • Dance course in cooperation with Elmayer Dance School

The afternoon supervision ends for all students at 5:30 p.m.

Single-day leave permission

Parents have the option to excuse their child from after-school care on an occasional, exceptional basis by providing a handwritten note for the supervising staff.

Permanent leave permission - grades 1 to 5

If a student needs to leave school early on a regular basis on a specific weekday and at a specific time for an important reason, this is only possible with a permanent leave permission.

A corresponding application must be submitted using the designated form via the class teacher to the head of after-school care. It should be noted that such permission may only be granted in justified cases and in accordance with school regulations.

A permanent leave permission must not result in any missed classes (e.g. physical education, tutorials, afternoon lessons, or optional courses). It will be revoked if the conditions under which it was granted no longer apply.

Permanent leave permission - grades 6 to 8

Permanent leave permissions may be granted, provided that students’ extracurricular activities do not take place during regular lesson times. In addition, they require the approval of the class teacher and are only possible as long as the student’s academic performance is not at risk.

These permissions are issued by the head of the after-school care program.

The Theresianum has a boarding school, which represents an important alternative for children of parents with demanding professional commitments or for families living outside of Vienna or abroad. It offers children and young people a home away from home – either on a continuous basis or for shorter periods as needed.
